Congratulations you are newly the guardian of a faithful companion! It has come time to introduce him to his new home where you and he will cohabit. In order for this transition to be harmonious, here are some avenues for reflection…
THERE IS NOT MIRACLE SOLUTION; BE PATIENT.
Know that your dog needs time to understand that you are his new family. Give him a few days of adaptation and be patient. Consistency, clarity, positive reinforcement and patience are guarantees of a harmonious relationship with your dog. Give him the necessary time to adapt and act with calm and gentleness. This will increase his sense of security and confidence.
The arrival at home:
- Calmly introduce your dog to your family.
- Let him explore the interior of the house at his leisure.
- Show him where his bowls, toys and bed are.
Little trick: Close the doors of prohibited rooms for your dog or install barriers to limit its access.
A few hours after his arrival:
After a few hours of exploring and getting to know your family, offer him a leather bone or a peanut butter stuffed Kong as an opportunity to retreat and relax.
Attention: If you want to retreive the Kong or the bone, wait for him to drop it by himself. Do not try to take it away from him, especially when he is eating it.
The outdoor exploration of your home:
The goal here is to make him discover his external environment by walking on your land, either on a leash or in freedom if your land is fenced.
His first nights:
Preferably, let your dog sleep in his small bed or in his cage, and this, in your room for the first nights. He will feel safe there and will have the feeling of being part of the family.
To avoid:
- In order to promote your dog’s integration, avoid, during the first few days, inviting relatives and friends over or having them around with him. Your dog needs to get to know you and your family first. It is therefore preferable to wait a few days before introducing your new companion to those around you.
- So that your dog feels like part of the family, avoid making him sleep outside, in the garage or in the basement. His first nights are essential for establishing a bond of trust with you.
Over time, your dog will feel more and more comfortable with you in addition to being comfortable in his new environment. The two go together! Listen to him and his needs.
