A smooth integration of your new feline companion into its new environment will promote a good start. Know that your new cat needs to get used to the noises and smells of your home in order to build its own landmarks.

Here are several tips and advice to facilitate his arrival.

Let your new companion come to you

  • Calmly introduce your new cat to all your family members.
  • Arrange their food, litter and rest area in separate places and show them where you have located it.
  • Make available to him the transport box used at the time of the adoption. This place will represent for him a secure place where he can take refuge. Place there toys and a blanket so that these items retain their smell over time.
  • Let him explore the interior of your house at his leisure.
  • Make sure that your cat can have access, at all times, to a quiet place in the house where he can withdraw.
  • If you have another cat or dog at home, take the time to properly introduce them to eachother to ensure a harmonious cohabitation.

Beware that it is possible that your cat, upon arrival, will have different behaviours due to its adaptation period.

He could:

  • Hide and not move, for a period up to 72 hours;
    This is his way of familiarizing himself and examining his new home.
  • Not eat;
    Try to stimulate his appetite by mixing wet (canned) food with his usual food..
    However, if it lasts more than 48 hours, contact your veterinarian.
  • Be distant and not wanting to get held or petted.
    It is a temporary need for avoidance. Respect his distances and give him time to acclimatize to you.
    Do not worry, it’s completely normal. Respect his pace of discovery and adaptation.
