Whether you live in the city or the countryside, registering your pet with the SPA de l’Estrie and having it wear its medallion at all times is primarily an obligation under the regulations of the municipalities served by our organization.

But beyond this mandatory nature, registering your pet and having it wear its medallion is ensuring its safety. Thus, if he runs away, strays or injures himself, his medallion clearly indicates that he has a family.

Here are some examples of situations where the medallion is ESSENTIAL.

• If your pet is found by a citizen: if a citizen comes across your animal and it wears its SPA de l’Estrie medallion, there is no possible confusion: he knows without hesitation that this animal has a family. Without having to move, he can communicate with our staff and transmit the code written on your pet’s medallion. It is thanks to this code that we can then check in our files who the family of this animal is. We will then be able to reach you and inform you of the place where he has taken refuge. You will then be able to collect it directly from this citizen without any charge.

• If your pet finds refuge at the SPA de l’Estrie: the code written on your pet’s medallion automatically sends us back to its file, thus to your contact details. We will be able to quickly communicate with you so that you can bring Fido or Minet home.

• If your pet is victim of a road accident: imagine for a moment that your dog or cat gets caught by a car or is injured in any way. Without a medallion, how will you be informed?

Several animals that have a family are found injured, but not identified. It is therefore impossible for us to inform the family of the situation, nor to offer them the chance to receive the required care.

• The medallion of the SPA de l’Estrie is the only one recognized by several municipalities and it also guarantees access to our 24/7 service. No other medallion is prescribed in the regulations of many municipalities in the Eastern Townships. In addition, our team of patrollers is at the service of the population 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Thanks to our collaboration with the various police forces in the region, you can reach us at any time, even outside of the shelter’s opening hours.

• The medallion of the SPA de l’Estrie is superior to the “homemade” medallion. On a “homemade” medallion, the information is not always visible or consistent with what citizens expect to see as identification. In additon, the coordinates written behind a collar or in a cylinder can eventually fade away and many people simply do not have the reflex to remove the collar to find them.

• The medallion of the SPA de l’Estrie prevents your pet from being placed for adoption. When a lost animal walks through our shelter and wears a medallion from the SPA de l’Estrie, we automatically know that it has a family. We can thus communicate with you without delay. It is not so with those who are not identified; we offer them lodging, but if they are not claimed after a certain period of time, we place them for adoption.
