The Société protectrice des animaux de l’Estrie is glad that Canada has taken the historic step of stopping cosmetic testing and eliminating toxic chemical testing on animals.

On June 13, 2023, Bill S-5 was adopted by the Senate and will become law, which will phase out toxic chemical testing on animals in Canada. Hundreds of thousands of animals are used each year to test the safety of different chemical substances. The new law will quickly accelerate the replacement of this painful practice with non-animal methodes that are not only cruelty-free, but also less expensive, more effective and more predictive of effets on humans.

Then, on June 22, 2023, Canada also passed Bill C-47, which will prohibit the testing of cosmetics on animals, the sale of cosmetics developed from animal experiments, and false or misleading labelling regarding the testing of cosmetics on animals. We are joining many other countries that have already taken similar measures to protect animals and promote safer and more human alternatives.

These are monumental achievements in the fight against animal cruelty. We salute all those who have advocated for these bans, as well as Canadian legislators for their commitment to animal welfare.

Together, we can continue to promote respectful and ethical practices in all fields!
